Telegram Launches NFT Conversion in New Gifting Feature

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has teased the introduction of a non-fungible token (NFT) conversion feature in conjunction with the platform’s new “Gifts” feature. This update will allow users to transform animated Gifts into the platform’s in-app currency, known as Stars, and potentially into NFTs in the future.

On October 5, Telegram officially launched Gifts, enabling users to send personalized messages accompanied by animated artwork to their contacts. These Gifts can be displayed on a user’s profile under the Gifts tab or converted into Stars, Telegram’s digital currency.

Introduced in June, Stars are Telegram’s in-app currency designed to facilitate payments for digital services within Mini Apps on the platform. The currency also provides a way for users to support creators.

Upcoming NFT Integration for Telegram Gifts

As part of the Gifts launch, Durov announced via his Telegram channel that the platform would soon support the conversion of some limited-edition Gifts into NFTs. He stated:

“Some gifts are in limited supply. Later this year, we’ll introduce the ability to convert these limited-edition gifts into TON-based NFTs.”

Once converted, these blockchain-based digital collectibles can be used and traded outside of Telegram. Durov added that users will have the option to auction and trade these tokenized Gifts, with ownership secured and recorded on the blockchain.

In addition to Telegram’s NFT initiatives, the Web3-based Telegram game, Hamster Kombat, also announced plans to integrate NFTs as in-game assets starting in November. The game, which has gained popularity on the platform, aims to expand its in-game economy through the use of NFTs.
